Prepare to be Sonicized

Art Watch

Welcome to Art Watch! On this page, every so often, I will post some artwork I have produced. From Sonic to scenes – expect a lot of artwork! The point of this page is to observe my drawing and art skills and see how I have improved or what to improve. I hope you enjoy! Please do not use any of my artwork, as I’ve worked hard to produce them. Inspired by Sonic Showcase Network‘s artwatch page.

Sonic the Hedgehog! This time, he’s eating chocolate. This drawing is made for an animation coming shortly. For this MS Paint drawing, I tried a more “pixel-art” style for it. Notice how I used the pencil tool for the line art, rather than the small square paint brush. For the colouring, I used the simple cell-shading, however I added more shades instead of the simple “dark tone, middle tone, light tone”. Notice how there’s an extra shade of blue in between the darker shade and the middle shade of blue. The result turned out fairly well.

Here’s a typical grumpy Shadow (or Mr. Shadow Scrooge). If you haven’t noticed, I redrew my YouTube background I used during December 2009. Click here to view it. Now, a year later, I’ve decided to redraw my picture in order to compare how my drawing skills have improved within the past year. First of all, I spent longer on the new drawing, therefore I took more care into drawing it. In the new drawing I also made an attempt of better lighting. I intended on putting the light source to the right which can be clearly seen with the background – blue fading to yellow. (The background was made in Fireworks MX, but the rest of the picture was drawn in MS Paint). I’ve also paid more attention to detail, such as Shadow’s hair on his chest. The shading makes it look more fluffy. I drew the tree slightly differently from the old one. The old Christmas was a simple drawn tree filled with green, then several strokes of darker green drawn on it. The new tree was made using four different tones, coloured with the airbrush. It’s not perfect, but it looks interesting. To conclude, big improvements were made. However, there are still improvements which can be made, such as improving the decorations and improving the way light is shown on the body with help from the light source. Maybe next year I will redraw the drawing again and compare the differences.

Within the last month, I’ve had a good go at recolouring Sonic X characters and inventing fan-characters. Originally, I had recoloured Amy in a Sonic X style into my own fan character, Chaosy the Hedgehog. Later, I decided to re-drew my own character. Not only did I do a pretty nice drawing, but it’s also practice to draw the Sonic characters in an anime/Sonic X style. The above picture and text was compressed and set as my Youtube icon.

Drawing of Night Yep by Chaosy
This is my first RuneScape drawing, actually second. My first drawing was done by pencil, but it wasn’t very sophisticated. I think I did a good job of the pose and shading, especially on the sword. To finish, I added a background. (The drawing is of a friend named Night Yep).

30th December 2009

This time, I’ve done Sonic using pencils! The drawing on the left was a basic sketch, drew lightly with pencil. I then coloured it and went over the outlines in black ink. What do you think? Let me know if I should do more by hand!

18th December 2009

Now, I have drawn Mina Mongoose, who is also from the Archie Comic series. Like the drawing of Lara-Su, this is my first and I think it is rather “good”. Even though, the colours may not be exact, I think the detail is very spot-on! I actually drew this for the next part of my Sonic Christmas Carol, so look out for this picture when it is out.

Lara Su Drawing by Tailsfox Chaosy
Here, is the first drawing I have ever done of Lara-Su from the Archie Sonic comic series. She is not one of the most common of characters, partly the reason she is from the future, (30 years later). For the drawing, I used MS Paint. I also had a comic book in front of me as a guide, being my first drawing of her. I think the colours and features are good. Perhaps, next time I could work on more on pose. Lara-Su is a great fighter and a lot of action is used in the comics with her – I could do that next time!
